  OBJECTIVE & DETAILS OF WORKSHOP:
  • Review State of the Art: Integrated management of natural resources in mountain areas has been  a matter of concern in order to solve environmental, economic and socio-economic and cultural problems at time to time.  These areas suffer a lot  due to its remoteness, fragility , inaccesibility , resource richness , poor transportation and  marketing facilities . One of the important causes is  over exploitation of resources and their  sectoral approach in their management . Studies have shown that the existence of one resource is dependant on the existence of other resources and are linked with reference to their relative  utility, use pattern, production, environmental conditions, technical inputs  etc.  This requires  coordinated  efforts in their management  to regulate their sustainable supply. This means the management  should  be balanced   and  calls for an integration and coordinated efforts in management. The approach is useful to integrate environment and development in decision making, to take up measures for protecting the atmosphere, to undertake integrated approach to the planning and management, to adopt measures for combating deforestation, to manage fragile ecosystems sustainable mountain development to promote sustainable agriculture and rural sustainable agriculture and rural development, to conserve biological diversity, to take up measures for environmentally sound management of toxic chemicals, hazardous waste, solid and so on. In view of this the workshop is aimed to formulate / recommend plan/package for integrated management of natural resources and to advocate its adoption at policy level.
  • Formulate specific programme of action: The  integrated management will deal  various parameters of sustainability, viz., economic, environmental, socio –cultural , technical, and legal  angles . Meanwhile  various resources being used in the mountains will focus on  livelihood , proper supply and integrated anagement. Accordingly the themes have been categorised  and put for discussion on various days.
  • Bring out the proceeding/papers in the subject: The  presentations and papers discussed in the workshop will be  prepared in  the form of proceedings  after editing.

 INTRODUCTION:

After being carved out of Uttar Pradesh, Uttaranchal has been richer in terms of wildlife and forest area. The thick forests and mountains house a variety of wild life and plant species. Twelve areas- Nanda Devi national park, the valley of flowers, Gangotri national park, Govind national park, Rajaji national park, Kedarnath sanctuary, Ascod musk deer sanctuary, Mussoorie sanctuary, Binsar sanctuary, Sanadi sanctuary and Govind sanctuary are now looked after by Uttaranchal. The ecological zones likely to fall in Uttaranchal are upper Himalayas called the snow-bound zones, lower Himalayas and Shivaliks.

Exploration and exploitation of natural resources for industrial development activities bring economical gains, prosperity, improvement in quality of life etc. It is said that the nature has enough to meet human needs but it cannot meet human greed. Thus the over and excessive exploitation of natural resources will result into ecological & environmental losses, irreversible damages to the natural cycles, human sufferings etc. The subjects such as conservation of natural resources, wildlife protection, deforestation and afforestation, National parks and Sanctuaries, global warming, ozone depletion etc have become components of environment.

The workshop deals with issues connected with protection and preservation of natural resources in an integrated mannaer and awareness with special reference to mountain areas.

ABOUT UNIVERSITY:
